AutoCAD for Mac 2027 drops OpenGL support entirely and moves to Metal as the only graphics engine. That change alone means older Macs without good Metal support will struggle, but on Apple Silicon machines the viewport feels noticeably snappier. Large coordinate scene optimization has been added to reduce CPU or GPU load when you are working on complex drawings, and layout tab switching is faster than before.
Drafting with new hatching options
Hatching now lets you create shaded shapes and follow a specific contour without needing an existing boundary. That saves a step when you are filling irregular areas in a floor plan or section.
Block management with Autodesk AI
The new Autodesk AI can scan your drawing and suggest objects that could be converted into blocks. It is not perfect, but it catches repetitive geometry you might have missed. Geometry Cleanup is also new in this version — it finds and fixes small gaps or overlaps automatically.
Crosshair and Help customization
You can now change crosshair colors per layout, which helps when you work in model space and on sheets. Online and offline Help documentation is both supported, so you can look things up without an internet connection.
Adjust the default workspace before your first drawing
After you have AutoCAD for Mac 2027 installed and running, a handful of settings will save you time if you adjust them before you start your first real drawing. The default workspace might not match how you work, and a few minutes of setup now means fewer interruptions later.
The shortcut menus are fully customizable in this release. Right-click behavior controls what appears when you select objects versus when the drawing area is empty. I set mine to show the recent commands list on a right-click in the drawing area, and the object-specific menu when something is selected. That alone cuts down on trips to the top menu bar.
Crosshair color is worth changing early, especially if you switch between model space and paper space layouts. You can set separate crosshair colors for each layout, so there is no confusion about which space you are in. A bright green crosshair in model space and a subdued gray one in layout mode works well for me.
Palettes migrate by default when you transition between workspaces. That means your Tool Palettes and Properties panel positions carry over. If you prefer a clean slate, you can turn that migration off in the workspace settings. Check the palette docking positions early — nothing is more annoying than a floating palette covering your drawing area when you first open a file.
The Metal graphics engine is the only option now, so there are no OpenGL settings to toggle. Make sure your system is running macOS 12 or later, with the latest graphics drivers. AutoCAD 2027 will warn you if your hardware is not compatible, but it is worth verifying before you get deep into a project.
Check these points before installing
Will my old DWG files open in this version?
Yes. AutoCAD for Mac 2027 uses the same DWG file format as the Windows version, and it opens files created in older releases without conversion. You can save back to older DWG formats if you are collaborating with someone on an earlier version. No file migration step is required.
Disable SIP only during installation, then re-enable it
The installation package includes instructions that say SIP must be disabled before you install. This is a standard requirement for many professional Mac applications that need low-level system access. You can re-enable SIP after the installation finishes. The instructions in the package walk you through the process.
Can I use AutoCAD 2027 on an Intel Mac?
Yes. The 2027 release supports both 64-bit Intel and Apple Silicon processors natively. The Metal graphics engine runs on both architectures, though performance on complex 3D models will be better on Apple Silicon machines because of the unified memory architecture. Intel Macs with discrete GPUs still work fine for 2D drafting and moderate 3D work.
Is the Help documentation usable offline?
Yes. Both online and offline Help documentation are supported. You can download the full Help set during installation and access it without an internet connection. That is useful if you work in the field or on a job site with spotty connectivity.
Scenario: A civil engineer updating an existing site plan
Someone I know works as a civil engineer for a small firm in the suburbs. They got handed a site plan drawn in AutoCAD 2019, full of property lines, utility easements, and contour lines from a survey. The original drafter left overlaps and small gaps where the contour lines met the property boundary. In earlier versions, that engineer would have traced over the broken geometry by hand or used a paid third-party cleanup tool.
With AutoCAD 2027, they ran Geometry Cleanup on the entire drawing. It scanned for gaps and overlaps, fixed the common errors automatically, and flagged a few ambiguous spots for manual review. That took maybe two minutes. Then they used the Autodesk AI block detection to find the fire hydrant symbols that were repeated across the plan. The AI suggested the top three candidates, and they converted all of them into a single block definition with one click. Scaling and rotation options in the block creation tools let them adjust one or two outliers without editing each instance separately.
The hatching along a specific contour also got used. They needed to shade a wetland delineation that followed a curved boundary with no existing polyline. The new hatch contour option handled it without forcing them to draw a closed boundary first. That was a minor time save, but it added up across the whole project.
The engineer's Mac is an Apple Silicon model, so the 3D navigation improvements and large coordinate scene optimization made a difference when they rotated the site model to check sight lines. The drawing was about 8 MB with moderate complexity, and the viewport stayed responsive throughout.
Differences from other Mac CAD tools that affect your workflow
AutoCAD for Mac 2027 sits alongside a couple of other professional CAD tools for macOS, and the differences matter depending on your workflow.
DraftSight for Mac
DraftSight is a 2D-focused CAD program that opens DWG files without conversion. It costs less than AutoCAD and runs well on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. However, it does not have the 3D modeling capabilities that AutoCAD includes, and it lacks the new AI-driven block detection and Geometry Cleanup tools. For pure 2D drafting, DraftSight is a solid alternative, but it cannot replace AutoCAD for 3D documentation or large civil projects.
BricsCAD for Mac
BricsCAD offers both 2D and 3D drafting and uses the DWG format natively. It includes its own AI-based tools for block detection and cleanup, similar to what Autodesk added in 2027. BricsCAD runs on Apple Silicon through emulation or natively depending on the version, but its performance on complex drawings is not as optimized as AutoCAD's Metal graphics engine. BricsCAD has a different interface and command structure, so the learning curve is steeper if you are coming from a long history with Autodesk products.
AutoCAD for Mac 2027 keeps the interface and command set that most CAD professionals already know. The transition from an earlier AutoCAD version is nearly painless. The new tools — Geometry Cleanup, AI block detection, contour hatching — are additions, not replacements, so you are not forced to change your habits.
- Autodesk AI can scan drawings for objects that can be converted into blocks.
- Geometry Cleanup added to find and fix small gaps or overlaps.
- OpenGL is no longer supported; Metal is the only graphics engine.
- macOS 12 or later
- Intel or Apple Silicon processor
- English interface language
Questions from the office
Does AutoCAD for Mac 2027 still support OpenGL?
No. OpenGL is no longer supported in AutoCAD for Mac 2027. Metal is the only graphics engine.
Can I open Windows DWG files in the Mac version?
Yes. AutoCAD for Mac uses the same DWG file format as the Windows version, so files open and save without conversion.
Do I need to disable SIP to install AutoCAD for Mac 2027?
Yes, the package says SIP must be disabled before installation. Install and activation instructions are included in the package.
Installation steps
- Disable SIP before starting the installation.
- Open the package and follow the install and activation instructions included inside.
