3D video walkthroughs — Sweet Home 3D can record a walkthrough of your home plan so you can see how rooms connect and flow before you build.

What each feature does

Drawing walls and rooms — Draw walls and rooms on one or more levels. The app keeps everything aligned so you can work on a multi-story house without losing track.

Changing colors and textures — Pick new colors or textures for walls, floors, and ceilings. You can also edit each piece of furniture — size, orientation, height, color, texture — to match what you actually own or plan to buy.

Photorealistic rendering — The app can produce photorealistic images with light and sun positions. That gives you a realistic sense of how a room will look at different times of day.

Printing and exporting — Print the home plan and the 3D view. The app also exports the plan in several formats for sharing.

Cross-platform and multilingual — Sweet Home 3D runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. The interface is available in 29 languages.

Real-world scenario: a kitchen remodeler

I helped a friend who was redoing her 1950s kitchen. She had measurements, but the original layout was cramped and the peninsula counter always got in the way. We started by drawing the walls from her floor plan, then placed windows and the back door from the furniture catalog. Once the shell was done, we dropped in cabinets, a refrigerator, and a stove — all resized to match her actual appliances. The 3D view showed right away that the island we wanted would leave only 30 inches of clearance. We nudged it six inches, checked the aerial view, and the walkthrough confirmed the path from sink to stove was clear. She printed the plan and took it to the cabinet maker. The whole thing took about two hours, and she didn’t have to learn CAD.

Fix walls that won't connect at corners

Walls that don’t connect at corners — If a wall ends slightly past or short of another, the room might not close properly. Zoom in close, select the wall end, and drag it until the snap indicator shows it’s connected. The app highlights the join point when it’s aligned.

Furniture that floats above the floor — This usually happens when a model’s origin point isn’t at the bottom. Select the piece, open its modification panel, and set the elevation to zero. If it still looks wrong, adjust the height until the bottom sits on the floor plane.

3D view shows a room as black or hollow — The room probably has no ceiling or floor texture assigned. Go to the room modification panel and pick a floor texture and a ceiling color. The 3D engine needs those to render the space properly.

Exported image looks washed out — Check the sun position settings before rendering. If the sun angle is low or behind the camera, the scene will lack contrast. Move the sun to a side position and re-render.

Video walkthrough stops too early — The walkthrough records the path you define with waypoints. If you click only two points, the video will be short. Add more waypoints along the route you want to show. Each waypoint creates a segment, so ten points give a smooth tour.

Search furniture by name and remember export settings

The furniture catalog sorts objects by category — kitchen, bathroom, living room — but you can also search by name. That saves time when you know the exact piece you want.

The app remembers the last export format you used. If you export to PNG once, the next export defaults to PNG unless you change it.

When you import a 3D model from the internet, it lands in the “Imported” category in the catalog. You can then drag it directly onto the plan just like any catalog piece.

The undo history goes back several steps. If you delete a wall and change your mind, undo brings it back. The history resets when you close the file, so undo early if something feels wrong.
