You keep your references in one place, pull bibliographic data for books, journals, and articles, then generate a bibliography from what you have saved. It is built for scientific papers and dissertations, and it works with EndNote Web so you can restore a library from the cloud. Cite While You Write sits inside Microsoft Word, and the latest macOS release fixes a crash in Word when Select Matching References appears. If you are juggling a long document and dozens of sources, this kind of tool keeps the citations consistent. Simplified Chinese localization is also new in this version.

Connects to Word and Google Docs through Cite While You Write

EndNote does not live in its own corner. It connects directly to Microsoft Word and Google Docs through Cite While You Write, so when you insert a citation in your document, it pulls from your library without you leaving the editor. The same toolbar handles formatting and switching citation styles. If you work on a shared document in Google Docs, the plugin behaves the same way it does in Word, which saves re-teaching yourself a different workflow.

On the macOS side, the library file is a standard package you can store in iCloud Drive or any cloud folder, as long as you are not syncing the open database from two machines at once. The sync feature in EndNote itself is the safer route for that. You can also drag a PDF from Finder straight into a reference, and the file attaches automatically. That is handy when you have a pile of downloaded articles sitting in a Downloads folder.

The connection to EndNote Web means your desktop library has an online copy. If you restore a library from the cloud, the references, PDFs, notes, and annotations all come back. That matters when you move to a different machine or after a reinstall. You can also restore previous versions of individual references, which is useful if you accidentally delete a note or change a field you did not mean to touch.

A biology graduate student managing 150 sources for a thesis

A graduate student in biology is writing a thesis with 150 sources spread across journal articles, book chapters, and a few conference proceedings. She keeps her EndNote library on the MacBook she uses in the lab, and she syncs it with EndNote Web. When she works on the thesis at home on an older iMac, she restores the library from the cloud and picks up where she left off. The PDFs she annotated on the MacBook are there, highlights and all, so she does not have to re-read the same papers. When her advisor asks for the bibliography in APA style, she switches the formatting in Word with one click. Later, when the department requires a different style, she changes it again without touching the references themselves. The crash fix in version 2025.3 matters here because she uses Select Matching References often to find the right source when the author name is not unique.

Color-code tags for chapters, status, or projects

You can color-code tags for any reference. That is a small thing, but if you are organizing sources by chapter, by status (read, to read, cited), or by project, a color label is faster than reading a text tag. The color shows in the library list, so you see it at a glance.

The sync covers notes and annotations on PDFs. That means if you highlight a passage on your laptop and make a note, the same highlights show on your desktop. It is not a separate step, you just sync the library and they appear.

You can restore previous versions of individual references. If you edit a reference and later realize the original data was correct, you do not have to re-enter it. The restore option pulls the earlier version from the cloud.

Missing Cite While You Write toolbar in Word fix

One snag people hit: the Cite While You Write toolbar does not show up in Word after installing EndNote. On macOS, this usually happens because Word needs to load the add-in manually. Go to Word's Tools menu, open Templates and Add-ins, and make sure the EndNote checkbox is checked. If it is still missing, re-running the EndNote installer usually places the file in the right folder.

Another snag: syncing says it fails or hangs. Often the cause is a firewall or a proxy that blocks the connection to EndNote Web. Check that your Mac can reach the sync server, and if you are on a university network, the IT department may need to allow the domain. Also make sure you are logged into the same EndNote Web account on both machines. A typo in the email address is easy to overlook.

PDFs that do not open or show a blank page: EndNote stores PDFs inside the library package by default. If you moved the library to an external drive or a network share, the path may break. The fix is to keep the library on the internal drive and use sync for portability. If you already have broken links, you can re-attach the PDFs manually by dragging them onto the reference.

Duplicate references can sneak in when you import from multiple databases. EndNote has a Find Duplicates feature under the References menu. Run it before you generate a bibliography so the same source does not appear twice in your reference list.

Installation steps

  1. Mount the downloaded disk image.
  2. Run the standard installation procedure.
