OmniPlan Pro: visual 1 of 4

OmniPlan Pro 4.11 improves compatibility with newer macOS versions and speeds up editing tasks that have many assigned resources. Here is what the app does and how it fits with the tools you already use.

What OmniPlan Pro does

Project planning and tracking — You schedule tasks, assign resources, and track progress. The app combines available time and resources so you can see conflicts early.

Microsoft Project support — The Pro version imports and exports Microsoft Project files. That means you can work with clients or colleagues who use Project without leaving OmniPlan.

Change tracking — Every edit is logged. You can see who changed what and when, which helps when a project shifts mid-stream.

Multi-project dashboard — If you manage several projects at once, the dashboard gives you a single view of status across all of them.

Earned value analysis — The Pro version includes EVM calculations so you can measure cost and schedule performance against your plan.

Works with your other apps — OmniPlan exports to PDF, CSV, OmniOutliner, OmniGraffle, and ICS. If you use OmniOutliner for outlines or OmniGraffle for diagrams, you can move data between them without re-entering it.

Network diagrams and calendars — You can view your project as a network diagram, and the app supports calendar integration for scheduling.

Collaboration — Share project data with colleagues and work together on the same plan.

Adding days of absence to individual calendars

OmniPlan Pro has a few features that aren't obvious at first glance but save time once you know them. Days of absence, for example, can be added directly to individual calendars. If a team member is out for a week, you mark that on their calendar and the resource availability adjusts automatically — no need to manually shift tasks around.

The app also lets you combine available time and resources across people or teams. Instead of eyeballing who has room to take on more work, you can let OmniPlan figure out where the slack is. It’s a quick check before you assign new tasks.

Change tracking in the Pro version works on a per-edit basis. You can accept or reject changes one at a time, or accept all pending changes at once. That’s useful when you’ve made a batch of adjustments and want to review them before committing.

For collaboration, the Pro version supports publishing and subscribing through Omni Sync Server or WebDAV. That means you can keep a shared project file on a server and have team members sync changes without emailing files around.

Adjusting Calendar and Project Settings after install

After you install OmniPlan Pro 4.11, there are a couple of settings that make the app work better for everyday use. The exact menu labels may vary, but these are worth checking in Preferences or Project Settings:

  • Calendar and working hours — Set your default work week and holidays early. If you add days of absence or non-working days to the calendar before you start scheduling, the app won’t assign resources on those days automatically.
  • Resource pooling — If you manage more than one project, enable resource sharing across projects. This way the multi-project dashboard can show whether a person is overbooked across all their assignments, not just one project.
  • Change tracking preferences — Turn on change tracking from the start if you plan to review edits later. You can choose whether to accept changes individually or all at once, but the app only logs edits if tracking is enabled.

These aren’t required for basic use, but they save rework later.

Getting the critical path to show

Even straightforward project planners have a few spots where new users get stuck. Here are the ones I run into most often with OmniPlan Pro, and how to get past them.

Critical path doesn’t show — The critical path is a built-in feature, but it only appears if you have dependencies set between tasks. If you don’t see it, check that your tasks are linked with predecessors or successors. Milestones and summaries also work better when dependencies are defined.

Change tracking seems empty — If you open the change log and find nothing there, it’s probably because tracking wasn’t turned on before edits were made. The app only records changes from the moment you enable it. If you’re starting a new project, turn it on in the settings before you begin.

If the file is from an older version of Project, try saving it as an MSP file from within Project first.

Also check that no one has the file open in exclusive mode — OmniPlan can handle simultaneous edits, but exclusive locks block updates.

Installation steps

  1. Mount the disk image and launch Open Gatekeeper friendly.
  2. Press Enter to bypass Gatekeeper in the Terminal window.
  3. Drag the app into the Applications folder.
  4. Start the app after installation.
