VueScan Pro is scanner software for macOS that works with over six thousand scanner models, often replacing or supplementing the manufacturer's own software.
September 2026 update adds batch colorize and super-resolution
Version 9.8.57, released August 23, 2026, adds batch processing for colorize and super-resolution, plus support for seven new Epson and eleven new Brother scanners. AI-assisted touch-up quality has been improved, and USB scanner support on macOS is better than before.
Does it still work with older scanners?
Yes. VueScan supplies its own scanning software for many models, so it can keep older scanners running even after the manufacturer stops updating drivers. It supports both automatic and manual control of most scan settings.
What image adjustments are included?
You get grain reduction, unsharp masking, and color cast removal. An infrared scan channel can remove surface defects like dust and scratches. For file management, you can now use date and time substitutions in folder names and file names with varying increments, such as file001+2.jpg.
Can I save my settings?
You can save your scan settings to a separate file and load them as reusable profiles. This is handy when you scan different types of documents or photos regularly.
Save time by setting output file format first
When you first open VueScan Pro, the default settings are meant to work with most scanners and most jobs. But a few adjustments right away can save you time later.
- Output file format. Set this to your preferred format before you scan anything. TIFF is a good choice if you plan to edit later; JPEG is fine for quick sharing. You can change it per job, so there's no need to commit forever.
- Color depth. If your scanner supports more than 24 bits, VueScan can capture at the scanner's internal color depth. Setting it higher gives you more room for color correction later. For plain documents, 24 bits is plenty.
- Default folder. The date and time substitution feature in folder names means you can have VueScan create a dated folder for each batch automatically. It's easy to skip, but once set, you never have to sort scans by hand again.
- Auto save. Turn on auto save so each scan writes to disk without asking for a filename every time. Paired with the file name increment pattern (file001+2.jpg), you get a clean sequence of files with no extra clicks.
Fix unrecognized scanners with macOS drivers
Even with a straightforward tool like VueScan, a few things trip people up. Here are the ones I've seen the most.
- Scanner not recognized. VueScan works with built-in macOS drivers, but if your scanner doesn't show up, check that no other scanning software is holding the connection. Close the manufacturer's app, unplug the USB cable, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in and relaunch VueScan. If it still isn't seen, try a different port or a powered USB hub.
- Slow scans or hangs. This can happen with older scanners on newer Macs. Try reducing the preview resolution or turning off the infrared scan channel if you don't need it. Also make sure you are running version 9.8.57, which has improved USB scanner support on macOS.
- Colors look off. The automatic settings are usually good, but if your scans have a color cast, use the manual RGB channel controls. Adjust the dynamic range and tonal response for each channel independently until the image looks neutral. The color cast removal filter can handle most of this automatically, but manual tweaking is sometimes necessary.
- Batch scan stops midway. If you are using batch scanning and the process stops, check that all your settings are saved as a profile. Then restart VueScan, load the profile, and try again. The batch processing for colorize and super-resolution in version 9.8.57 can be resource-heavy, so give the Mac a moment between batches.
Sends scans directly to Photoshop, Lightroom, or Preview
VueScan Pro outputs standard image file formats, so it works with just about any photo editor or document tool on your Mac. That makes it easy to send a scan straight to Photoshop, Lightroom, or even Preview for a quick crop.
If you keep a tidy file system, the date and time folder naming and the flexible file name patterns let you scan directly into your existing folder structure. No extra sorting step needed.
For archival work, saving scanner raw data to a file is a good option. You can process that raw data later with the scanner turned off, which is handy if you are scanning a big stack and want to tweak settings later without rescanning. The raw file contains all the data from the sensor, so you aren't giving up any quality by deferring the processing.
VueScan also plays well with macOS' built-in scanner drivers. It does not replace them; it supplies its own scanning software on top of them. That means you can keep using other scanner apps if you need to, but most people find VueScan covers everything they need.
For anyone searching for a reliable way to keep an older scanner working, or for those who want more control than the default software provides, VueScan Pro is a solid choice. It doesn't require a new workflow, just a few minutes of setup.
