If you've used the built-in screenshot markup tool on a Mac, you already have a rough idea of what Presentify does — except Presentify works live, on anything on your screen, while you're presenting or recording. It lives in the menu bar and lets you draw, highlight, or spotlight over images, videos, PDFs, code, or any app window, in real time. The automatic erasing keeps annotations from piling up, and holding the Fn key lets you interact with the app underneath without toggling modes. It's a practical tool for anyone who walks through slides, code, or demos in Zoom, Google Meet, or Skype.

You can switch between a plain highlighter, random gradient colors for drawing, or a spotlight that follows your cursor. Full-screen mode works fine, and the cursor-highlighting option makes it easy for viewers to track your mouse during a demo. The app is straightforward: pick a tool, annotate, and let automatic erasing clean up after you.
How a teacher uses Presentify daily
A college instructor teaching calculus over Zoom finds the usual screen sharing limiting. They share a PDF of problem sets, then use the highlighter and circle tools to walk through each step. The spotlight effect keeps attention on the current formula, not the entire page. When a student asks about a previous step, the instructor scrolls back and the automatic erasing means old annotations are gone — no need to manually clear the screen. Drawing random gradient shapes helps differentiate between steps in a multi-part problem. The instructor also uses the cursor highlight so students can see exactly where the mouse is when pointing at a graph. Without leaving the call, they can flip to a new problem set PDF and start annotating immediately.
Works with XP-Pen and Wacom drawing tablets
Does Presentify interfere with my normal cursor?
No. The app adds a layer over your screen, but your regular mouse and keyboard continue to work. When you want to click buttons or type in the app underneath, hold the Fn key and the annotation tools temporarily release control. That means you can start a video in your browser, play or pause it, and then resume drawing without switching windows.
Annotates over full-screen Keynote and PowerPoint slides
Yes. Presentify works with graphics tablets like XP-Pen and Wacom. If you already use one for note-taking or design, the app will pick up the tablet's input as a drawing tool. This is especially useful for teachers who prefer a stylus over a mouse.
Will it record my annotations?
Presentify itself is a live annotation tool, not a screen recorder. Any annotations are visible to whatever is capturing your screen — Zoom, QuickTime Player, OBS — so if you're recording your screen through another app, the drawings will appear in the recording.
Forgetting the Fn key causes annotation confusion
Yes. The app works in full-screen mode, so you can annotate over Keynote or PowerPoint slides without leaving the presentation view. Cursor highlighting and spotlighting still function.
Hold Fn to interact without triggering annotations
The most common misstep is forgetting to use the Fn key. New users try to click a button or scroll a page and are confused when the annotation tool grabs the click instead. Hold Fn, interact with the app, then release Fn to keep drawing.
Another early issue is leaving the eraser tool active. People switch to the eraser to delete one annotation, then draw something new without switching back — and the new mark also gets erased. Always select a drawing tool again after erasing.
Some users expect Presentify to remember annotations between slides. It does not; it works on whatever is on screen right now. When you switch to a new slide or a different window, the annotations from the previous screen are gone. Use automatic erasing to your advantage, but don't rely on saved annotations.
Fixes for common Presentify snags
Presentify won't launch on first install
After dragging the app to your Applications folder and starting it, it may appear stuck. Quit the app using Activity Monitor (find "Presentify" in the process list and end it), then launch it again. This is a known quirk with version 8.1.3 and is resolved by the second start.
Can't see annotations on a recorded video
This usually happens when the recording app is capturing the desktop behind the annotation layer. Make sure your recording software is set to record the entire screen or the Presentify window. If you're using Zoom, choose "Share Screen" before you start annotating so the overlay is included.
Drawing lags with a graphics tablet
If strokes feel delayed, check that the tablet's own software is up to date. Presentify itself is lightweight, but older tablet drivers can introduce input lag. Restarting both the tablet and the Mac can help. If the problem persists, try reducing the system's visual effects in System Preferences > Accessibility > Visual Effects.
Spotlight or cursor highlight disappears
These effects are tied to your mouse position. If they vanish, you may have accidentally toggled them off in the menu bar menu. Click the Presentify icon in the menu bar and re-enable the spotlight or cursor highlight option. Also verify that you haven't switched to a different annotation tool that overrides the effect.
