TG Pro: preview 1 of 3

TG Pro is a Mac utility that monitors internal temperatures, controls fans, and runs hardware diagnostics. It shows sensor data and fan speeds right in the menu bar, so you can keep an eye on things without opening a window. The app runs quietly in the background with low CPU usage.

You can set up custom fan rules that respond to specific temperature sensors — useful if you push your Mac hard or work in a warm room. TG Pro also logs temperature events and sends alerts when things get hot. It works on Intel Macs and the full M4 lineup, including M4 Pro and M4 Max. Anyone who wants to keep their Mac running cool and catch hardware trouble early will find it practical.

Fix missing fan data by approving the system extension

People run into a few things pretty often when they start using TG Pro. One that comes up is the app not showing any fan data after installation. That usually means the system extension hasn't been approved. Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS), go to Privacy & Security, and look for a message about a blocked extension from Tunabelly Software. Click Allow, then restart TG Pro.

Another one is custom fan rules not kicking in when you expect them to. If you see that happen, make sure your rule is tied to the right sensor and that the temperature threshold is set a few degrees below where you actually want the fans to spin up. That gives the rule time to engage before things get warm.

Sometimes the fan speed resets to automatic after Siri or voice dictation runs. The latest version restores your fan control and speeds after those finish, so updating to 2.103 is the fix. If you're still on an older build, that's likely what you're seeing.

Hackintosh users sometimes find the app doesn't detect all sensors. Open TG Pro's preferences and toggle the Hackintosh support option. That tells the app to look for sensors in the usual places for non-Apple hardware. It's not perfect for every build, but it helps.

M4 fan control arrives in the latest update

The update that matters most if you own an M4, M4 Pro, or M4 Max Mac is full fan control. Earlier versions of TG Pro could read those machines' sensors, but you couldn't manually adjust fan speeds. Now you can set custom curves or lock in a fixed speed, same as on Intel and older Apple Silicon models.

The Siri and voice dictation fix is smaller but noticeable if you use those features often. Before, your fan settings would revert to automatic whenever Siri finished listening. Now they stay put. Same for dictation — no more wondering why the fans suddenly went quiet mid-sentence.

The Auto Boost rule fix matters if you move your Mac between power sources during the day. A rule that boosted fans when you plugged in might have failed before.

The startup flow for new installations got a polish. If you're setting up TG Pro for the first time, the initial prompts are clearer about what permissions it needs and why. Less guessing.

Set up automatic fan control in the Fans tab

Here's the straightforward way to set that up in TG Pro.

  1. Open TG Pro and click the fan icon in the menu bar, then choose Open TG Pro.
  2. In the main window, find the Fans tab. You'll see each fan listed with its current speed and a slider.
  3. Switch from Automatic to Manual to check that your fan responds to changes. That confirms the app has control. Switch back to Automatic when done.
  4. Go to the Rules tab. Click Add Rule.
  5. Give the rule a name like "CPU cooling boost."
  6. For the trigger, choose CPU from the sensor list.
  7. For the action, choose the fan you want to control. Set the speed to something like 3500 RPM — enough to move air without being loud.
  8. Click OK. The rule is now active.
  9. Create a second rule to bring the fan back down.

The app checks sensor temperatures every few seconds, so the rule responds quickly. You can make as many rules as you need.

Keep an eye on the menu bar graph for a day or two to see if the rules trigger when you expect them.

TG Pro runs on all Apple Silicon Macs natively

Does TG Pro work on Apple Silicon Macs? Yes, it runs natively on M1, M2, M3, and the full M4 lineup. Version 2.103 added fan control for M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max — earlier models already had it. Intel Macs are fully supported too.

The app uses very little CPU when running in the background. The sensors are polled at a low rate, and the menu bar graph updates without significant overhead. You won't notice it in Activity Monitor.

Do I need to open it every time I restart? No. TG Pro launches automatically after installation. It shows up in your Login Items list. If it doesn't start on its own, check System Settings > General > Login Items and add it there.

Can it damage my Mac by setting fan speeds wrong? The app has safeguards. You can't set a fan speed below its hardware minimum or above its maximum. If you set a rule that keeps fans high, the Mac will still throttle itself if temperatures get extreme. TG Pro gives you control within safe limits.

Does it support Hackintosh systems? Yes. There's a preference toggle for Hackintosh support that improves sensor detection on non-Apple hardware. It works on most common builds, though sensor availability depends on your specific motherboard and kexts.

Questions from the office

Can TG Pro control fans automatically?

Yes. You can create custom fan rules based on temperature sensors, and the app runs those rules in the background with low CPU usage.

Does TG Pro work on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. TG Pro supports Apple Silicon and Intel 64-bit Macs, including the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max models.

Installation steps
