elastiquePitch: preview 1 of 1

The Formant Shift control is where elastiquePitch starts to feel like more than a pitch shifter. Move it and the character of the voice changes without the usual chipmunk or monster side effects—useful when you want a vocal to sit differently in a mix without drawing attention to the effect.

Freeze grabs a slice of audio and holds it

Pitch Shift is the obvious one, moving everything up or down in semitones. But the real work happens in how the plugin handles the sound grains. With Freeze, you can grab a slice of audio and hold it, turning a passing note into a sustained texture. That’s handy for pads or transitions. The Grain Size setting changes the length of those slices; shorter grains give a more metallic, granular feel, while longer ones keep the source more intact. Combined, these controls let you dial in everything from subtle detune to full-on transformation.

Built for Modern Macs

Version 2.5 runs the latest ÉLASTIQUEPRO algorithm, which keeps the audio smooth even at extreme settings. It supports up to 16 audio channels, so it’s not just for stereo vocals—multichannel mixes work too. The interface is in English, and the plugin runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs with macOS 10.15 or later.

Plugin appears in the insert list but passes no audio

A few things tend to trip people up when they first put elastiquePitch into a session. The most frequent one I hear about is the plugin appearing in the insert list but not passing audio. In almost every case, the issue is the channel count mismatch—if your track is stereo and the plugin instance defaults to a different layout, you get silence. Check the channel configuration in your DAW's mixer or the plugin's own channel selector. Version 2.5 handles up to 16 channels, so it needs to match what your track is sending.

Another common snag is the Freeze button seeming to do nothing. Freeze captures the current grain buffer, so if Grain Size is set very long, the freeze might take a moment to engage or sound like it's just holding the same note. Shorten the grain size first, then hit Freeze, and you'll hear the stutter effect more clearly. If the frozen sound won't release, bypassing and re-enabling the plugin clears the buffer.

Latency can catch people off guard when they're tracking vocals through the plugin in real time. The ÉLASTIQUEPRO algorithm needs a small lookahead to shift pitch without artifacts. Most DAWs compensate automatically, but if you hear a delay while recording, lower the Grain Size or switch to a lower-latency monitoring path in your session. It's not a bug—it's the algorithm working.

Shift pitch and formant independently without changing vocal identity

Vocal producers and mix engineers are the obvious fit. Being able to shift pitch and formant independently means you can nudge a vocal into key without changing whether it sounds like the same person sang it. That's less work than reaching for a tuning plugin followed by a separate formant processor.

Post-production editors working on dialogue or ADR will find it useful too. Small pitch adjustments to match a re-recorded line to the original performance are cleaner when formants stay put. The multichannel support matters here—surround mixes with up to 16 channels can be shifted as a whole without adding multiple plugin instances.

Sound designers and electronic musicians will get more creative mileage out of it. The combination of Freeze, Grain Size, and the echo mode turns the plugin into a texture generator. A single piano note or ambient pad can become a completely different sound source. It's not a granular synth, but it scratches that same itch for some sessions.

More grain control and formant separation than AlterBoy

Compared to Soundtoys Little AlterBoy, elastiquePitch gives you more control over the grain behavior and formant separation. AlterBoy is simpler and faster to dial in a vocal effect, but you don't get Freeze or adjustable grain size. For straight pitch and formant work, elastiquePitch feels more surgical.

Waves SoundShifter is another option. It's straightforward and reliable for pitch and time adjustment, but it doesn't offer formant shifting as a separate parameter. If you need to change pitch without altering timbre, SoundShifter won't do it. elastiquePitch's formant control fills that gap directly.

Celemony Melodyne is a different category entirely—it's a full pitch and timing editor with note-level correction. elastiquePitch isn't trying to compete with that. It's a real-time effect, not a spectral editor. If you need to process a whole mix bus or a live input without slicing audio into blobs, elastiquePitch is the more practical choice.
