Euro Truck Simulator 2: visual 1 of 7

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is for people who find calm in long highway stretches and satisfaction in backing a trailer into a tight dock. It is a truck simulator video game, released on 18 October 2012, that lets you drive a semi across a map of more than 60 European cities.

Relaxed driving and a trucking business to build

  • Anyone who likes driving games with a relaxed pace.
  • Players who enjoy building a business — hire drivers, buy trucks, and grow your company.
  • People who want to customize their rig with headlights, signals, beacons, exhaust systems, and other parts.

64-bit Intel only; dialogs are unvoiced

  • The game is 64-bit Intel only; Apple silicon users will need Rosetta 2.
  • Voice language is music accompaniment only — dialogs are not voiced.
  • The current version, 1.61.1.1s, adds Proximity Exploration and a reworked Livestock Trailer.

Underestimating the truck's turn radius

The most common error I see is underestimating the turn radius. A truck is not a car. People try to swing into a roundabout or a tight city corner like they would in a sedan, and end up mounting the curb or scraping a guardrail. The simple fix is to swing wide, use the mirrors, and take the turn slower than you think you need to.

Another stumble is ignoring the fatigue meter. Beginners drive for hours without stopping, then wonder why the truck feels sluggish and the steering drifts. Rest stops are there for a reason. Pull into a parking area, and the meter resets. It makes the next leg much easier to handle.

Many new players also skip the tutorial messages, then get stuck on the map screen trying to figure out how to accept a job. The job market interface takes a minute to read. Open the map, click a city, and look for the freight symbol. The game walks you through it, but only if you let it.

Trailer backing is another sore spot. People jackknife the trailer on the first few reverses. The trick is to keep the steering wheel still and use small movements on the trailer controls, not big crank-and-pray motions. Practice in an empty lot for five minutes, and it clicks.

Start with short local jobs to learn the basics

Start with quick local jobs rather than long hauls. Short runs let you learn the handling, the map navigation, and the job system without the pressure of a two-hour delivery. You earn enough cash to fix small mistakes without going broke.

Set aside fifteen minutes to adjust the control sensitivity. The default steering and throttle curves work for a gamepad, but keyboard or wheel users usually want a lighter touch. Find the control settings early, not after you've already crashed twice.

Keep an eye on the GPS route before you pull away. The game picks a path, but it sometimes sends you through narrow village roads that are a pain with a full trailer. Look at the route overview and pick a highway alternative if one is available. It adds kilometers but saves frustration.

Save manually after you finish a delivery and before you accept a new one. The auto-save is reliable enough, but having your own save before a risky maneuver means you can reload and try again without losing progress. I keep three manual saves and rotate them.

Pull past the dock, then back in straight

Backing a trailer into a dock is the most satisfying thing in the game once you get it right. Here is a plain sequence that works every time.

  1. Pull past the dock, stopping so your cab is roughly even with the dock entrance, leaving about a truck-length of space between your cab and the dock.
  2. Turn the steering wheel fully to the right (if the dock is on your right) and reverse slowly. The trailer will start to swing toward the dock.
  3. When the trailer is at about a 45-degree angle to the dock, straighten the steering wheel and keep reversing. The trailer should continue to swing in.
  4. As the trailer approaches alignment with the dock, turn the steering wheel left to bring the cab back in line. Reverse straight the rest of the way.
  5. Stop when the rear of the trailer is just inside the dock marker. Use the mirrors to check both sides.

It takes two or three tries the first time, but the pattern becomes automatic after a few deliveries. The key is to go slow and correct early, not late.

Game won't launch? Wait five minutes or restart

The game won't launch after installation. On Intel Macs running macOS Tahoe or later, this usually means the game is still being verified by the system after copying. Wait five minutes, then try again. If it still hangs, restart the Mac and launch from Launchpad. The game needs no activation, so there is no license server to wait on.

The map screen is blank or shows no jobs. This happens when you are in a city that does not have a freight market in your current connection. Open the full map, click a different city, and see if job offers appear. If not, drive to a nearby city and check again. Job availability depends on your company level and the region.

The truck feels too fast or too slow at highway speeds. The game simulates real truck acceleration, so a fully loaded rig takes time to reach speed. If you want a more responsive feel, take a lighter load or upgrade the engine in the garage. The technical customization menu lets you swap parts one at a time, so you can tune it gradually.

The trailer wobbles or fishtails at high speed. This is normal physics with an empty or lightly loaded trailer. Slow down to about 80 km/h and it settles. If you are hauling heavy cargo and still getting wobble, check that the cargo is evenly distributed — the game simulates load balance, and uneven weight makes the trailer unstable.

Questions from the office

Can I run Euro Truck Simulator 2 on an Apple silicon Mac?

The game is built for 64-bit Intel architecture. On Apple silicon, it should run through Rosetta 2, but performance may vary.

Does Euro Truck Simulator 2 have voice acting?

No. The voice language is music accompaniment only, so you won't hear spoken dialogue in the game.

Installation steps

  1. Mount the downloaded disk image.
  2. Drag the game to the Applications folder alias.
