Duplicate File Finder Pro: preview 1 of 4

Duplicate File Finder Pro 8.5.2 for Mac is a utility that scans your drives and folders for duplicate files, then helps you clean them up.

Add Dropbox folder from Finder and scan by category

You can point the scan at your Dropbox folder right from the Finder window. This way, duplicates stored in the cloud-synced folder get flagged along with everything else.

Scan report by category — After a scan, results are grouped into images, video, music, archives, and documents. That makes it easier to see where the bulk of the duplicates are.

Visual scan report — A quick visual summary shows how much space the duplicates are taking up before you decide what to remove.

Sorting the duplicate list — You can sort duplicates by name, size, total size, type, or duplicate count. Handy when you want the biggest space hogs first.

Cleanup options — Select files and move them to Trash or delete them permanently. There is also folder merging and a similar folders finder for deeper cleanup.

Hidden folders included — The app can scan hidden folders, so duplicates tucked away in Library or other system areas are not missed.

Scanning and restoring everyday duplicates

When you run a search for the first time, the app checks every file in your selected folders, including hidden directories. The scan does its work without slowing your machine too much. Once done, you get a list of every duplicate grouped by category—video, music, images, and so on.

From that list, you can pick individual files or let the smart selection tool mark whole sets for you. The smart selection is useful when you have several copies of a file and only want to keep the youngest or the one in a certain folder. You can then preview a file to double-check before you delete. If you make a mistake, the restore removed duplicates feature lets you bring back files from Trash as long as you haven't emptied it.

Fix scans that miss external drives

A few things trip people up when they start using Duplicate File Finder Pro. Here are the ones I see most often.

Scan doesn't see files on an external drive — Make sure the drive is mounted and you've selected it in the folder picker. The app works with external hard drives and network folders, but the drive has to be connected before you start the scan. If you plug it in mid-scan, you will need to restart.

Accidentally deleted the wrong file — Use the restore removed duplicates feature. It only works if you sent files to Trash rather than deleting them permanently. So I'd suggest using Trash until you are certain about what stays and what goes.

Duplicate list is too long to look through — Sort by total size or duplicate count. That pushes the biggest space hogs to the top. You can also filter by category and focus on archives or video files first.

Can't find the scan report after closing the app — The visual scan report is shown right after the scan finishes. You can export it or make a note of the totals before you close the window. There is no saved history between sessions, so if you need to keep the report, jot down the numbers.

Similar folders vs. duplicate folders — Duplicate folders holds an exact copy of another folder. Similar folders contain the same files but may have different names or a few extra files. Both options are in the app, but they serve different purposes. Use duplicate folders when you want an exact match, similar folders when you suspect two project directories hold the same material.

Cleared space by scanning user folder and hidden files

They wanted to clear space without removing anything important.

I opened Duplicate File Finder Pro and added the main user folder to the scan list. The app also asked if I wanted to check hidden folders—I said yes, because system Library folders can hide cached duplicates that apps create on their own.

From the sorted list, I sorted by total size to catch the biggest offenders first. A set of video files accounted for 6 GB alone. I previewed the oldest copies to make sure they weren't master files, then let the smart selection mark the extras. I moved those to Trash.

Next, I opened the duplicate folders finder and searched the Desktop. There was a folder called "project backup" that matched another folder in the same directory. I merged them, keeping the newest version of each file. That saved another 2 GB.

Before closing the session, I checked the similar folders option across the entire Documents folder. It found two project directories that were nearly identical. I merged those too, then emptied the Trash to free up the space.

Total cleanup without losing a single file I needed.

Runs on macOS 10.13, Apple Silicon and Intel

The app runs on macOS 10.13 or later and works with both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. It is a 64-bit application, so it will use memory as needed, but it stays within normal limits during a standard folder scan. The interface is English only, which is fine for most offices.

If you plan to run this on a work machine, the same requirements apply. The only extra consideration is network folders: those are supported, but scanning across a network will depend on your connection speed and the size of the remote drive.
