DVDFab: visual 1 of 4

DVDs still show up in offices — archived presentations, training discs, old product catalogs. When you need a copy, a backup, or a format that plays on a modern device, DVDFab for macOS handles the job. Version 12.0.8.2 runs on any Mac with OS X 10.10 or later, Intel or Apple Silicon, so older office machines are covered.

What DVDFab does

  • Clones a DVD 1:1, including menus and extras.
  • Rips DVD video for iPods, PSP, Xbox 360, Zune, Archos, mobile phones, and PDAs.
  • Burns DVD folders or ISO images to disc, including dual-layer media.
  • Removes common protections like CSS, Region Code, RCE, Macrovision, and UOPs.
  • Builds a custom DVD from selected titles, with or without the original menu.
  • Merges titles from multiple sources onto one disc.

The interface is localized in 27 languages, so it fits a multilingual workplace. If you work with damaged discs, DVDFab can often restore information even when the IFO file is unreadable. It is a practical tool for keeping physical media usable.

A typical scenario for a small office

Imagine a real estate office with a library of training DVDs from the early 2000s. Agents need to watch those on their iPads during commutes, but the discs are region-locked to NTSC and some have scratches. An assistant runs DVDFab, selects the Main Movie copy method, and rips each disc to MP4 files. The software strips the region code and reads past the damaged IFO file on one disc that looked dead. A few hours later, the whole training library lives on a shared network folder. No need to hunt for a working DVD player or carry discs to a listing appointment.

macOS 15.x compatibility keeps 12.0.8.2 running

DVDFab 12 is a separate branch from the older 13.x series, and 12.0.8.2 keeps things predictable. The main changes that matter for day-to-day work are small but practical:

  • Compatibility with macOS 15.x, so the app still opens on the latest system updates without a workaround.
  • Continued support for ARM and Intel Macs from a single download, so no hunting for a separate Apple Silicon build.
  • The same eight DVD-to-DVD copy methods are there — Full Disc, Main Movie, Split, Customize, Split Customize, Clone, Merge, and Write Data — nothing got removed or renamed, which saves re-learning.

If you already used DVDFab 12 before, the update does not change the workflow. It is the same interface, same options, just kept current for newer Macs.

Check version 12.0.8.2 if the app won't open on macOS 14 or 15

People run into a few predictable issues. Here is what to check first:

  • The app does not open on macOS 14 or 15. Make sure you have version 12.0.8.2. Older 12.x builds may not launch on recent macOS releases. Delete the old copy, download the current version, and re-install.
  • The disc is not recognized. Some external USB DVD drives do not supply enough power. Try a powered hub or a drive with its own AC adapter. Also check that the disc is clean — smudges and light scratches cause read failures that DVDFab cannot always work around.
  • Copy fails halfway through. This often means the source disc has a scratch in a spot the software cannot re-read. Try a different copy method: Clone is stricter than Main Movie. If the IFO file is damaged, use the "restore" feature before starting the copy.
  • The output file does not play on a portable device. Check the conversion profile. DVDFab has presets for iPod, PSP, Xbox 360, Zune, Archos, mobile phones, and PDAs. Pick the one that matches your device, not a generic MP4 setting.

Skipping copy method options causes new user errors

New users often treat DVDFab like a simple ripper and skip the copy method options. That leads to trouble. Here are the common errors:

  • Choosing Full Disc when you only need the movie. Full Disc copies menus, trailers, and FBI warnings — everything. That wastes time and disc space. For a single movie, use Main Movie. For a collection of episodes, use Merge or Customize.
  • Always set the output format before the copy begins.
  • Not checking the disc type. DVDFab supports DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R DL, and DVD-R DL. If you buy single-layer discs but try to copy a DVD-9, the software will prompt you to split the content. Read the prompt — do not cancel it.
  • Skipping the IFO restore. When a disc has read errors, beginners assume it is dead. The IFO restore function in DVDFab can often recover enough structure to complete a copy. Try it before you toss the disc.
  • Running the app from the disk image. The installer drags the app into the Applications folder for a reason. Running it from the mounted DMG causes odd behavior and permission errors. Always copy it to Applications first.

A little attention to these details saves time and blank media. DVDFab is straightforward once you match the method to what you actually need.

Questions from the office

Will DVDFab run on an Intel Mac?

Yes. DVDFab 12.0.8.2 supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and needs at least OS X 10.10.

Can DVDFab copy a DVD with copy protection?

It can remove CSS, Region Code, RCE, Macrovision, and UOP protections, which covers most commercial DVDs.

Installation steps

  1. Open the downloaded disk image.
  2. Drag the DVDFab app into the Applications folder shortcut.
  3. After the copy finishes, launch DVDFab from Launchpad.
