UJAM Symphonic Elements STRIIIINGS: visual 1 of 1

UJAM Symphonic Elements STRIIIINGS splits the orchestra into two layers: Low Strings and High Strings. That is the first thing to understand about this plug-in. Each section adjusts independently, so you can shape the weight and air of a part without reaching for another instrument.

Starting with the Crossfade Control

  • Start with the Crossfade control. It blends the two string sections smoothly, letting you move from a low rumble to a high shimmer in real time.
  • Play with the sound-design element built into the engine. It is not just a sample player — there are textures and treatments that go beyond straight orchestral strings.
  • Adjust each layer separately to find the balance that fits your track. The Low Strings give you weight; the High Strings add presence.

System and compatibility

The plug-in is a 64-bit instrument that runs on macOS 10.14 through macOS Tahoe 26. It works on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and it requires 4 GB of RAM. It is also available for Windows. UJAM calls the series modern orchestral virtual instruments, and STRIIIINGS lives up to that — it is for cinematic string-section textures with a sound-design edge.

Layering a cue from scratch: a workflow

Here is how I would use STRIIIINGS to build a string bed for a short dramatic scene. This assumes you already have a DAW open and the plug-in loaded on a MIDI track.

  1. Pick a style from the 60 onboard styles. For a tense, slow build, choose something with long sustained notes rather than short articulations. The style determines the basic character of both the Low and High Strings.
  2. Write a simple two-part line. Put the bass and celli part in the lower register — one or two notes per chord. Put the violins and violas part an octave or two higher. Keep the rhythm simple at first; you can add motion later.
  3. Open the Crossfade control. Set it so the Low Strings are at about 70 percent and the High Strings at 30 percent. This gives you a solid foundation without the top becoming too thin.
  4. Adjust the Low Strings layer. If the bass feels too boomy, pull back the level for that section only. The High Strings layer may need a small boost to cut through a busy mix.
  5. Browse the sound designer presets — there are more than 200 of them. Find one that adds a subtle texture or movement. This is where the sound-design element comes in. A gentle shimmer or a slow filter sweep can turn a plain string pad into something that holds attention.
  6. Tweak the Crossfade during the arrangement. In the verse, keep the Low Strings dominant. As the cue builds, move the Crossfade toward the High Strings for a brighter, more intense feel.

The whole process takes about ten minutes once you know the plug-in. You do not need a full orchestral template. Just two MIDI tracks, one instance of STRIIIINGS, and some attention to how the two layers interact.

How STRIIIINGS fits with other apps and macOS features

If you use Logic Pro, the plug-in integrates normally as an AU instrument. You can route its output to Logic's own channel strip effects — compression, reverb, EQ — without leaving the project. The same applies to Ableton Live, Cubase, Studio One, and the other supported DAWs.

On macOS, STRIIIINGS works with Audio Units and VST formats. If you run it on an Apple Silicon Mac, it runs natively. There is no need for Rosetta translation, which keeps memory usage predictable. The 4 GB RAM requirement is reasonable for a modern orchestral instrument, but factor it into your session alongside other heavy plug-ins.

For sound design work, you can layer STRIIIINGS with other instruments. Put a synth pad underneath and use the Crossfade to blend the strings in and out. Or run the output through a separate audio effect in your DAW — a convolution reverb with a large hall impulse, for instance — to push the strings further into the background. The plug-in gives you a clean, balanced signal to work with, so it behaves predictably in a mix.

Composing on a MacBook Pro in coffee shops

A friend of mine works on indie game soundtracks. He composes on a MacBook Pro, often in coffee shops or while traveling. His sessions are tight on CPU and disk space. He keeps a few reliable instruments in his template, and STRIIIINGS is one of them.

Last month he needed a cue for a stealth level — low tension, with the player moving through a dark corridor. He loaded STRIIIINGS on a single track, chose a style with slow bowing, and wrote a simple two-note pattern in the Low Strings. The High Strings stayed almost silent until the end of the level, where he brought them in with the Crossfade for a sudden moment of alarm.

He did not need any other string libraries. The sound-design presets gave him a subtle pitch wobble that suggested unease without being obvious. The whole cue took under an hour, and it fit the game's limited audio budget without extra processing. That is the kind of situation where a focused instrument like STRIIIINGS saves time and keeps the session portable.

Questions from the office

Do I need to do anything special the first time I launch the plug-in?
