Old World is a historical 4X strategy game about managing an empire across generations, set in classic antiquity. Created by Soren Johnson, it puts you in charge of one of seven kingdoms, each with four noble families. Characters age and die, and new generations take their place. You manage marriages, heirs, and relations with noble families while facing more than 3,000 unique events inspired by history and mythology.

| Developer | Mohawk Games |
| macOS support | Intel and Apple Silicon |
| Interface languages | Russian, English, German, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, Japanese |
| Multiplayer | Hotseat, asynchronous, cloud play |
The game includes multiplayer modes such as hotseat, asynchronous play, and cloud play. Each kingdom has its own noble families, and you must balance diplomacy, war, and internal politics. With more than 3,000 events, no two playthroughs are alike. The current version adds Polybolos attack bonus, restricts Fort placement, and includes Mac crash debugging.
Runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs
Old World runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, so it works on the office iMacs and the newer M-series machines without translation layers. The game doesn't require Rosetta, which keeps system resources free for other tasks. On a Mac used for both work and leisure, that matters more than you might think.
The game's cloud play and asynchronous multiplayer integrate with the standard macOS networking stack. No special drivers or background services are needed. You can keep iCloud, Time Machine, and your regular office apps running without conflict. The installer places the game in the Applications folder by default, which is the standard macOS convention. Uninstalling is as simple as dragging the app to the Trash.
Mod support is worth mentioning for players who like to tweak their experience. The game loads mods from the usual macOS user folders, so you can manage them manually or through the game's interface. If you use Steam or other storefronts, the game's mod folders remain accessible through the Finder for manual edits or backups.
The Orders system, which limits unit movement and actions each turn, encourages careful planning. On a Mac, you can save and reload between turns to test different approaches. The game's save files are standard documents you can back up alongside your other important data.
Supports ARM and x86 64-bit architectures
The game supports both ARM and x86 64-bit architectures. That covers any Mac from the 2020 Apple Silicon transition onward, as well as older Intel models still running supported versions of macOS. The download details list the game as tested on macOS Tahoe and a Mac mini 2024 M4, but it should run on any compatible Mac meeting the minimum requirements.
Interface languages include Russian, English, German, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, French, and Japanese. The language setting can be changed within the game, so you don't need to alter your system language. The voice and music are in their original form regardless of interface language.
The game is DRM-free, which means no additional launchers or online activation checks. You install it, you play it. No background processes running after you quit. No constant internet connection required for single-player campaigns or scenarios.
Installs in a minute or two from a disk image
Friday evening, after the office machines are shut down and the week's accounts are balanced. I mount the downloaded disk image, run the installer, and choose the Applications folder. The installer finishes in a minute or two. I drag the disk image to the Trash to eject it.
I open Old World from the Applications folder. The main menu loads. I select a randomly generated map with a medium-sized world. I pick a kingdom with four noble families and start the game. The first few turns involve settling the capital, assigning workers to resources, and scouting the surrounding tiles. Each unit move costs an Order, so I plan carefully.
My ruler produces an heir. I arrange a marriage with a noble family to secure a temporary alliance. A random event pops up: a neighboring kingdom offers a trade deal. I accept. More events appear over the next hour. Some are historical, some are mythological. They add flavor without overwhelming the core strategy.
Around turn 60, my ruler dies. The heir takes over. The noble families shift their loyalties. I adjust my strategy, building new units and researching technologies. The AI builds fewer obsolete units now, thanks to the latest update, so the mid-game feels more competitive. I save the game and quit. The whole session runs without any extra steps. No configuration files to edit, no compatibility settings to adjust. Just install and play.
- Polybolos now have +50% attack.
- Forts cannot be adjacent to other Forts.
- AI builds fewer Militia, Conscripts, and obsolete units.
- Some Mac crash debugging was added.
- macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon)
