If you already use a virtual guitar in your DAW, Ample Guitar LP III 4.0.1 for Mac will feel familiar — but the fingerstyle library recorded with a 1959 Reissue guitar gives it a different character. For rock, blues, or jazz parts, start by loading the fingerstyle preset and play a few open chords. Then try the picking articulations on a single-note line. The string effects (slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs) respond differently depending on velocity, so vary your playing strength. After that, switch to the picking mode and compare the same part. The plugin covers a lot of ground without overwhelming you.
Blues-rock demo with fingerpicked clean verses and overdriven bridge
You are putting together a blues-rock demo for a vocalist who wants a live feel, but you do not have a real guitarist. The song needs a clean verse part with fingerpicked chords and a bridge with a slightly overdriven single-note lead. With Ample Guitar LP III, you can work it this way: set the fingerstyle articulation for the verse, play the chord progression at a relaxed tempo, and use the built-in amplifier to dial in a clean tone. For the bridge, switch to picking mode, raise the gain on the amp model, and record a simple pentatonic line. The string effects — a slide into the first note of the phrase, a quick hammer-on for the turnaround — keep the part from sounding stiff. It is not a live player, but it gets the idea across in a session where you need to write and arrange fast.
Ten minutes of articulations to hear attack differences
When you first load the plugin into your DAW, spend ten minutes just cycling through the articulations with a single sustained note. Listen for how the fingerstyle and picking modes change the attack. Then play a few open chords in both modes and note the difference in body and sustain. The fingerstyle library is the main addition in version 4, so it is worth giving it some attention early on.
- Start with a simple project — one track, no effects. That way you hear the instrument dry before the amp and effects color it.
- Try the same short phrase (say, four bars of a blues shuffle) in fingerstyle and picking. Notice which suits the part better.
- Add the built-in amplifier and experiment with the gain and tone controls. A little overdrive can hide any MIDI-ness in the attack.
- Use the string effects sparingly at first. A single slide or hammer-on per phrase is often enough to suggest a real performance.
Keep the first few sessions short. If you get ear fatigue from hearing the same note samples, step away for a few hours and come back fresh.
Works as standalone or inside Logic, Cubase, Reaper, and Pro Tools
Ample Guitar LP III runs as a plugin inside any DAW that supports VST3, AU, or AAX — Logic Pro, Cubase, Reaper, Pro Tools, and others. It also works as a standalone application, which can be helpful if you want to practice a part or test a sound without opening a full project. On macOS, the plugin installs to the standard system plugin directories, so your DAW should find it after a rescan.
Because the instrument responds to velocity and note duration, you can control articulations from your MIDI keyboard or from a piano roll in your DAW. If you use a macOS tool like Audio MIDI Setup to route MIDI between apps, you could even trigger the standalone version from a sequencer or an iPad app over Wi-Fi. For offline activation, the Ample Sound Activation Manager works with the Challenge Code and User ID method — no internet required once you have the files. On an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac, the plugin behaves the same way; just make sure your DAW is running in native mode for your architecture.
