Arturia Mellotron V: visual 1 of 1

Arturia Mellotron V is a virtual instrument that faithfully recreates the classic Mellotron keyboard sound. In a typical session, you'll use it as a stereo instrument track, often routed to a bus for shared reverb or tape-style treatment. Its 96 chromatic semitones across the track row let you play the full range of the original tapes, which is handy for string, choir, and flute parts that sit behind a mix.

On a bus, Mellotron V works well as a pad layer, blended under guitars or synths. Its built-in effects and ADSR envelope mean you can shape the sound right inside the plugin, without adding extra channel strips. If you're scoring a film cue or doing a retro pop track, it's the go-to for that wobbly, mechanical charm.

The current version, 1.9.3 (5306), fixes preset browsing crashes and improves search and favorite management, so you can find that perfect tape loop faster. It also loads user samples in WAV, AIFF, and FLAC, giving you room to create your own Mellotron-style tapes.

Browse 65 factory tape banks before you play

Before you start playing, open the preset browser and browse through the factory banks. The 65 original tape banks offer a lot of variety, and it's easy to overlook one that fits the part you're working on. If you know you'll return to a tape often, mark it as a favorite right away — the improved favorite preset management in version 1.9.3 keeps them sorted correctly, even with shuffle enabled.

The mechanical, noise, and tape controls are worth adjusting before you start recording. The default settings might be too clean or too noisy for the track you have in mind. A small turn of the noise control can add the right amount of tape hiss for a vintage feel, while the mechanical section reproduces the motor and gear sounds of the original hardware. You'll hear the difference quickly, so it's better to set these early than to chase the sound later in the mix.

Load up to 10 samples per track row

Each track row can use up to 2 factory samples and 8 user samples, or a combination of 2 factory samples and 6 user samples. That gives you 10 slots total per track. If you load your own WAV, AIFF, or FLAC files, you can blend them with the original tapes — useful for layering a choir tape under a custom vocal sample, for example.

The playlist improvements in version 1.9.3 are easy to overlook but make a real difference when you're working on a project with multiple tape banks. Playlists are now visible immediately after calling up a project, and they stay visible after removing and reinstalling the instrument. So you can rearrange your tape order without losing sight of what you had.

Preset naming no longer crashes, and the preset search works better. If you have a lot of custom presets saved, the search function saves time. Just type a keyword and you'll find the right tape bank faster than scrolling through the list.

Mellotron V 1.9.3 requires macOS 11 or later and 64-bit host

Mellotron V 1.9.3 runs on macOS 11 or later and supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. It's a 64-bit application only, so you'll need a 64-bit host. It loads as a VST, AAX, or Audio Unit plugin, or you can run it standalone if you want to audition tapes without opening your DAW.

The plugin itself is straightforward to install. The package includes installation and activation instructions, so you won't be guessing the steps. Once it's in your plugin folder, your DAW should pick it up on the next scan.

Because it relies on sample playback, the plugin will use more memory when you load multiple tape banks or user samples. If you plan to run several instances, keep an eye on your system resources. The mechanical and noise processing is light, but the tape emulation does add some load. For typical use with one or two instances, it should behave well on a current Mac.
