reFX Nexus: preview 1 of 1

reFX Nexus is a sample-based sound design plugin for Mac that works as a virtual instrument on a track or a bus insert. It is not a standard rompler — you can load custom samples and build presets from scratch. In a typical session, you would use Nexus on a MIDI track to play its built-in sounds or your own samples. Its arpeggiator can follow the host tempo, and version 5.5.12 lets the arp pattern serve as the initial sequence pattern. The plugin also fits on a bus for processing: the Ducker now has a keyzone trigger, and the Clipper FX handles peaks. Active modulation sources show up in the mod depth rings and tooltips, which helps when you are tweaking a mix. The skin editor lets you change the interface look without leaving the plugin.

Load Nexus on a MIDI track or route it to a bus

  1. On a MIDI track. Load Nexus as an instrument plugin. Pick a preset or load your own sample. The BPM readout on the SYS page keeps the timing in line with your project tempo.
  2. On a bus or aux channel. Use Nexus as an insert for additional processing — the Clipper and Ducker work here too.
  3. Building a custom preset. Create your own sound, save it, and recall it later. Custom expansions can be made from your own sample libraries.
  4. Managing via reFX Cloud. Keep Nexus, expansions, and updates in one place. The Cloud app handles the rest.

Adjust the SYS page BPM readout and tempo override

When you open Nexus 5.5.12 for the first time on a Mac, a few adjustments on the SYS page save you from fighting defaults later. The BPM readout is visible right there, and you can override the tempo if your project uses a different time feel than the host. I set this early when a preset’s arpeggiator sounds too fast or slow against my session.

On the same page, check the option that lets the arp pattern act as the initial seq pattern. If you build a lot of sequenced parts, this keeps the arpeggiator and step sequencer in sync from the start. The unison overhaul in version 5.5.12 gives you up to 16 voices — that is worth dialing back if you are on an older Intel machine or running multiple instances. Start at 4 or 8 voices and raise it only when the sound needs the extra thickness.

The skin editor is another early stop. You can adjust the interface contrast and colors to suit your monitor and lighting. I prefer a darker skin for late sessions; the editor makes that change without restarting the plugin.

Try two oscillator wrap modes to fix harsh or abrupt sounds

Nexus 5.5.12 adds two oscillator wrap modes. These are tucked into the oscillator section and let you control how waveforms behave at their boundaries. If a sound feels harsh or cuts off abruptly, try the alternative wrap mode before reaching for an envelope or filter. It is a subtle change that can smooth out digital artifacts without extra processing.

The Clipper FX is new in this version and sits in the effects chain. It catches peaks cleanly, which matters when you layer multiple oscillators or samples and the output starts to spike. I use it on bass presets more than anything else. The keyzone trigger for the Ducker is another quiet addition: you can set the ducker to respond only within a specific MIDI note range. That keeps the sidechain effect from triggering on stray low notes or high hats.

Active modulation source tracking appears in the mod depth rings and tooltips. When you hover over a modulation destination, the plugin tells you what is modulating it and by how much. This is one of those features you do not notice until you are troubleshooting why a filter keeps moving — then it saves you ten minutes of hunting.

Syncs to your host clock as an Audio Unit or VST plugin

Nexus works as a standard Audio Unit or VST plugin, so it loads into any modern DAW on macOS — Logic Pro, Ableton Live, Cubase, Studio One. The BPM readout and tempo matching mean it syncs to your host clock without extra MIDI clock routing. If you use reFX Cloud to manage expansions, the app sits in your menu bar and handles downloads in the background, which is handy when you are working in Logic and need a new sound mid-session.

On macOS, Nexus runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon macs. That matters if you use a Mac Studio or a newer MacBook Pro — the plugin does not need Rosetta. The skin editor uses standard macOS controls, so it feels familiar if you have adjusted preferences in other pro apps. The clipper and ducker integrate with your DAW’s automation lanes, so you can draw in changes over time.

For sound designers, the sample import works with files you have in Finder or in sample pack folders. You can drag audio directly into Nexus from a Finder window, slice it, loop it, and assign it across the keyzone. That workflow connects Nexus to your existing sample library without a separate import tool. The custom expansion feature lets you package your own presets and samples into a single file, which you can then share or back up with the rest of your session assets.
